As 2014 comes to a close, our blog contributors have been reminiscing about all the amazing music released this year. So before the ball drops, we’re going to wrap up 2014 with a few lists of our favorite albums, tracks, and artists. Check out the top albums of the year, curated by Briana:
Caribou – Our Love
As the first record in four years under Caribou, Canadian electronic music composer Dan Snaith made a noteworthy return with Our Love. Snaith opens up in this full length album, allowing you to sonically experience the hardships and pleasures of love in every aspect of life from dance R&B vocalist Jessy Lanza featured on “Second Chance” to the soaring synths distributed throughout the entire record.
FKA Twigs – LP1
Young Turks’ British superstar FKA Twigs has come a long way to release her debut album LP1 and it’s no surprise the record sits comfortably on everyone’s year-end lists.LP1 is filled with questions in her erotic whispery voice asking “was I just a number to you?” to a track about her previous identity, “was she the girl that’s from the video?” all on top of ambient trip hop production that lets her shine and showcases her emotive beauty.
Future Islands – Singles
If you’re judging a book by its cover, the artwork for Singles of a headless woman facing the sea is as melodramatic as Samuel T.Herring’s utterances from start to end of the album. 4AD picked up Baltimore band Future Islands this year and put out one of the most triumphant indie rock records that makes you feel like you’ve just won an incredible race after every track with Herring’s passionate rasps cheering you on and on.
Future – Honest
When Future put out an album called Honest this year, nothing was the same for 2014. The Atlantic rapper Auto-Tuned his blood, sweat and tears in this collection of 18 songs with special guests Drake, Andre 3000, Kanye West and many more. Although Future and Ciara might not be a couple anymore, this record shows his love for the game, drugs, and the side effects of being with someone special.
Nicki Minaj – The Pink Print
Released just in time before the year is over, Nicki Minaj finally put out one of the most anticipated hip hop records of 2014 on November 22nd. The Pink Print is an album for bad bitches only with tracks like “Get On Your Knees” featuring Ariana Grande, “Feeling Myself” featuring Beyonce, and “Only” with Drake, Lil Wayne, and Chris Brown — each fire production lures you in and once each verse is delivered, you’re on a thrill ride into the world of hip hop stardom.
